About Course
Abeka’s 2nd Grade English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum is a traditional, phonics based program that spans daily lessons throughout the year.
Core Subject Areas
- Phonics: Daily practice during the first semester reinforces advanced phonics concepts, special sounds, and blends to expand vocabulary and improve reading speed.
- Reading: Students read aloud from a set of 10-11 books—including classic/modern stories and new reading comprehension skill sheets—transitioning into chapter books. [
- Language: Heavily emphasized in the second semester, covering capitalization, punctuation, proper sentence structure, short paragraphs, and story composition.
- Spelling, Vocabulary, and Poetry: Features 32 phonics-based word lists, weekly spelling activities, definition-based vocabulary words (introduced in the second spring semester), and 7 memorized poems.
- Penmanship: Marks the official introduction to cursive handwriting, starting with letter formation tied directly to phonics practice using Writing with Phonics 2.
